Basset Hound: "Dog", from the Detective Series: Columbo (1971-2003)

"Dog" was the name given to the Basset Hound owned by Detective Columbo. It was magnificently lethargic and so ugly he was cute. "Dog" would only bark and run at the worst possible times. He hardly became a regular character but he does make splendid appearances in certain episodes. We learned that "Dog" enjoys ice cream, watching television and swimming in a neighbour's pool. The original dog died and was replaced by an equally passive pooch. This change went unnoticed by the public. However the new dog did create some problems for Columbo, since it was much younger than the original one, so they had to put makeup on the second dog to make him look older...

On 23 June 2007,Elwood, a two-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, was crowned the world's ugliest dog. Elwood, dark coloured and hairless - save for a mohawk-like puff of white fur on his head - is often referred to as Yoda or ET, for his resemblance to those famous science fiction characters. He was placed second last year. Most of the competing canines were also Chinese Crested, a breed that features a mohawk, bug eyes and a long, wagging tongue. Beyond the regal title of ugliest dog, Elwood also earned a $US1000 reward for his owner.

However!

Had Li'l Sam not gone to Doggy Heaven, surely, the previous three-time world champion, a 14-year-old Chinese Crested would have won again. Li'l Sam passed away shortly after last year's contest. He was 14yrs old ( x7 = 98 human years! ). His appearance created a lot of controversy but he maintained his regular crowd of admirers and haters. In all fairness to Li’l Sam, how do you think you would look when you are 98 years old and naked?? Not any better than this - I'm sure.... R.I.P Li'l Sam.

My Noisy Dog

By Eddie

He scratches away at the newly laid parquet,
yapping just like an old lady to have his say.
He soundly snores when he sleeps,
and woefully wines when he weeps.
He growls when grumpy and bleak,
snarls in grim need of reap.
He whimpers when he’s meek,
yodels and howls at any midnight creak.
He sleuth-fully pitter-patters on all fours in “attempt” to silently seek,
rubber-necks to take a quick peep.
He slurps when he has heaps,
always gulps to keep.
He huffs and puffs to blow your house down,
barks at the slightest moonlit sound.

Basenji: "Lady", from the book: Goodbye, My Lady (1954)

Good-bye, My Lady is a novel by James H. Street about a boy and his Basenji dog. It was published in 1954 and made into a movie in 1958. Due to its popularity, it was reprinted in 1978. Skeeter is a little orphaned boy, who adopts a lost dog called "Lady". A friend hears from a traveling salesman that a kennel in Connecticut lost a Basenji. The description of the lost dog, named "Isis of the Blue Nile", matches that of "Lady"...

Question:

Hi Mario, I have a question about mites. In July Brutus got three hot spots, one on his butt right above the tail, and two on his right shoulder. My vet said the tail was a hot spot, but the shoulders were mites. She said it was related to his testosterone levels and we should fix him right away. She also put him on a liquid oral medicine, everyday for two months, then every other day for two months, and then once every three days for two months. The hot spot was cured quickly and the hair grew back quick, the hot spots she said would take longer to the other follicles wake up. My question to you is everything looks great, all his hair has grown back and he looks perfect. My vet moved to Florida and we have a new one, but I wanted to check with you if this sounded familiar, and if we need to continue the medicine, we are three months into it. Is this something you know about? Ivercide 1% is the medicine. I have refills from the new vet but wanted your input.
Thanks
Jennifer Peres

Answer:

Hi Jennifer,

How I hate those nasty mites. However, I have never heard of mites or hot spots occurring due to hormone levels. This is an easily corrected issue with the right shampoo and lotions. What meds are you giving for two months? Ivercide is for mites. Same for mange. This I believe is another form of Ivomectin. This is used orally to control heartworms and other parasites as well as a treatment for mange which is caused by certain mites. I would also bathe him with an oatmeal shampoo. Dry skin often leads to hot spots. I recall you telling me you were going to fix the poor guy. If that’s what you want to do, then it is fine. But I would not do it based on these skin issues. Please do continue the meds the vet prescribed for the entirety of the suggested period. Not doing so because he looks fine is a mistake we all often do. Let the meds do their job. Please bear in mind that I am not a vet. Just simply letting you know what I have learned during thirty years of dealing with dogs and exotic animals.
Regards,

Question:

I just got the result from the animal hospital. Abby is fine. So, I want you to know that. Also, give me any tips or advice about taking care of this dog. She is a little crazy… she bites everybody… cute… but it hurts so much. So, I'm thinking to send her to a dog training school - something like that. Is a dog training school good? Or is it good to find a private dog trainer??

Vivian

Answer:

Hi Vivian,

First you need to get her well acquainted with you and everyone else that lives in the home. But you cannot allow her to nibble on people or objects who/that can be damaged by her. You do this by holding her by her muzzle and saying NO with a stern voice. If she continues, you must again repeat the procedure and continue to do so until she gets the point. Maybe raise your voice a little each time; but never scream. This may take a little time, but she will learn. After a while she will respond simply to the word no. Never slap or hit her. This will create fear and often animosity. You want your pup to look up to you and love you. Not respond to fear. Treats like rawhide bones or flavored biscuits as rewards when she does the right thing is an excellent way to train her.

You have not told me if she is housebroken. Let me know what you are doing for that. The kennel she arrived in would be good for this. Before you hand her over to a trainer, it is of utmost importance that she is well bonded with you first. Even then, unless you want her to become a fully trained dog, it is best that you take up training classes where you actually are with her. These are more economical and in my opinion more effective. When you give your dog over to a trainer for a period of time to then get her back, there is a transition period to deal with. Plus often the dog will not respond the same way to her owner as she would to the trainer. She is a very young and eager to please pup. I am sure you can make her into exactly what you want her to be.

• The best tracker was recorded in 1925, and the record is still held by the Doberman Pinscher named "Sauer", trained by Detective-Sergeant Herbert Kruger. Sauer tracked a stock thief 100 miles (161 km) across the vast Great Karroo, in South Africa by scent alone. Did you know that a man named Louis Doberman, a German tax-collector, first bred the Doberman breed in the late 1860s to protect him while he worked?

Two stunning Dobermans...

Akita Inu: "Gin" from Silver Fang (1986)

This is a story of an Akita Inu pup called Gin (Japanese for "silver") who leaves his owner, to join a pack of dogs. The pack gathers strong dogs from all over Japan to fight a deranged bear and his minions. The Japanese Cartoon: Silver Fang, was inspired by a news article which told of hunting dogs that had been abandoned by their masters and had begun living as wild animals...

• World’s smallest dog..... The smallest dog in history was a tiny Yorkshire Terrier from Blackburn, England. At two years of age and fully grown this little dude was an incredible 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) tall by 3.75 inches (9.5cm) long! He weighed only 4 ounces (113grams)! He was approximately the size of a matchbox.

Gotta love that face....

• World’s tallest dog..... The tallest dog on record was a Great Dane, named Shamgret Danzas. He was 42 inches (1 meter 7 cm) tall at the shoulder and weighed 238 lbs (108 Kg).

And so we are believers.....

These days however, the record of the World's tallest dog is held by Gibson, also a Great Dane. Check out the Youtube video of him!
